Ovoid vase – Michele Cascella for Richard Ginori

Ovoid vase – Michele Cascella for Richard Ginori

Ovoid maiolica vase with a slightly inward-slanting rim, hand-painted under a transparent glaze with a seascape featuring a hippocampus, fish and aquatic plants, executed with rapid, fluid brushstrokes applied in successive washes. The watery background is built up in circular modulations of blue and light blue, while the marine elements are defined with concise touches in brown and yellow. The mouth is bordered by an ultramarine-blue band. A unique piece, with decoration entirely executed by the artist, representing a rare contribution by Michele Cascella to the ceramic art produced by the Richard Ginori manufactory. The painterly treatment and the freedom of gesture confirm the non-serial, fully autographic nature of the work. The collaboration between Michele Cascella and the Società Ceramica Richard-Ginori in 1936 is documented by the plates and ceramic panels preserved in the Civic Collections of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, bearing the “Richard-Ginori” mark and the signature “M. Cascella ’36”, as attested by the corresponding ICCD (Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione) cataloguing records and by V. Dell’Orto’s study on the Fondazione Augusto Richard.
