Pair of plates – Doccia

Pair of plates – Doccia

Porcelain plates with scalloped edges and a body shaped by four sets of undulating, parallel ribs extending from the well to the rim, which is decorated in relief with the straw motif, a design used in Meissen since 1735.
The polychrome painted decoration is of the “A ciocche di fiori” type, inspired by German styles, featuring four floral compositions arranged on the rim alternately with the ribs and a fifth composition at the center.

The flowers, painted in a naturalistic manner—including the rose—are of European origin and grouped in small bouquets, giving rise to the more commonly known name of the decoration today: “Al Mazzetto.”

Doccia, Sesto Fiorentino (Fi); 1785.
