Cantagalli Grotesque-Style Ewer

Cantagalli Grotesque-Style Ewer

A ewer with a flattened ovoid body set on a molded oval foot, featuring a long, shaped spout and a large, curved, zoomorphic handle—modeled in high relief—that connects to the body via fantastical elements and a grotesque mask. Set against a cobalt blue ground is a rich grotesque decoration comprising figures, putti, fantastical horses, masks, scrolls, and foliate motifs, arranged around oval medallions enclosing classical-style profiles; ruby-red and gold luster highlights and reflections accentuate its exquisite quality.
The form, inspired by Renaissance rock-crystal models, is documented in a piece purchased by Frederick Stibbert in 1891; it appears in the 1895 Cantagalli catalogue and the 1911 price list (item no. 178) as “Flattened amphora with ornamentation and fine lusters”
