Cantagalli “Iznik” vase

Cantagalli “Iznik” vase

A flattened, spheroidal-shaped majolica vase with a narrow edge and a short, everted neck. A central band with continuous rosette decoration, bordered by two raised bands, divides the vase into two hemispherical portions: the lower portion is pictorially punctuated by a geometric decoration of lanceolate leaves, and the upper portion is decorated with facing birds (parrots or peacocks). The vase is painted in polychrome with a dominant bright green hue, in keeping with the 16th-century Ottoman pottery tradition, and sits on a turned wooden base decorated with silver leaf.
Florence;  about 1900.
