Gambrinus Halle tankard – Galileo Chini

Gambrinus Halle tankard – Galileo Chini

A polychrome majolica advertising tankard, featuring a body that tapers slightly toward the rim and a side handle. It is decorated against an ivory background with expansive plant motifs—leaves and sinuous tendrils—painted in a copper-green glaze, in keeping with the *Liberty* (Art Nouveau) style. Along the upper band, bordered by blue lines, are the inscriptions: “Bürgerbräu – Gambrinus Halle – Genoa-Florence – Munich.”

Created for the renowned Gambrinus Halle in Florence—opened in 1894 in what is now Piazza della Repubblica—this piece belonged to one of the city’s most significant and elegant gathering spots during the Belle Époque.
An example of this same model is illustrated and described in bibliographic entry no. 58, “Gambrinus Tankards,” which documents its production at the Arte della Ceramica manufactory between 1900 and 1903.
Bibliography: “Boccali Gambrinus”, entry no. 58, featuring an illustration of two similar examples.
