Statue “Abundance” – Gio Ponti

Statue “Abundance” – Gio Ponti

A large earthenware statue decorated in polychrome, depicting a young woman holding a tall woven wicker basket on her head, filled with fruit, like the two baskets hanging from her arms.
Abundance, as it appeared in the 1930 Richard-Ginori Modern Art Ceramics catalog, was first presented at the 1927 Monza Biennale of Decorative and Industrial Arts, where it was illustrated with the caption “canefora” in the official catalog. Extremely rare, it is the tallest of all the sculptures designed by Gio Ponti for Richard-Ginori and combines iconographic elements from both subjects identified by the two titles attributed to it. It borrows the motif of the basket on the head from canephoras, while the double load of fruit alludes to and emphasizes the cornucopia, a traditional attribute of abundance.
